In heat exchangers such as those used in air conditioning systems, the surface area available for heat transfer is a major determinant of efficiency. Aluminum foil ranging in gauge from 0.002” to 0.007” is the material of choice for this application because it provides the maximum heat transfer area per unit of cost. One of the ways air conditioner manufacturers meet enhanced federal energy efficiency standards introduced in 2006 is by using significantly greater quantities of finstock.
